The lovers-eye was very popular in the 18th/19th century, were it was common to carry a medallion with a miniature of your family with you. But if you wanted a memory of your secret lover, painters produced lovers-eye-pictures, like those above. In a eye you could see the soul, the love and the passion. And if that wasn't clear enough, a little tear would give expression.
