DD: Is it important for a designer to “Practice what they preach” – wearing their own clothes?

FB: I definitely think it makes life more worthwhile. That’s what leaves icons and legacies in our rich history. Why deny the future generations that joy? Why take yourself too seriously? If you have conviction in your work surely it should carry through in everything you do. Why separate your passions? I salute the Mary Quants, Zandra Rhodes, Vivienne Westwoods of this world. Where would we be if they wore black Gucci suits? It’s not even about being outlandish. Jean Muir looked perfect in her navy crepe and beige lipstick. Having said all that I will let Christopher Kane off for not wearing his mini-dresses! But then he has Tammy (Christopher's sister) doesn’t he?

Colourful World

It's cold, dark and wet outside. A time of the year when i get itchy feet. So many colours are out there to be embraced. Different people and cultures, new aroma and flavours to be explored. Travelling is so important, it's a constant enticement. The best possibility is to work somewhere for a while. Then you don't only rush through places, in a steady fear of missing something. But you can take the chance, to really discover the atmosphere, people, the city or whatever. To learn, to experience, to grow.

Real travelling is pure adventure, and hey that's what makes life exciting...!

Fashion April 1875

This is a dress i made. It's not a wedding dress... i just made it out of white cotton, because i wanted to try the pattern. And everything else would have been too expensive. But i actually like the white pure look. The dress is from 1875, copied after a picture. That means it has a farthingale, a cul, a rather high waist, broad shoulders and lots of adornment. Hello victorian lady.

I like, when things have a history. Old furniture, marks, scratches, faded colours show character. And i like, when rooms show the character of the person who lives there. Inconsistencies shape individuality.

Erinye

Here you see the costume i made as my final project for the degree as a Gewandmeister (costume interpreter) in July 2008. I designed and made it: Erinye, demon of revenge. My inspiration were war-goddesses like Pallas Athena, Kali and the Valkyries, and the costumes of the film "300". The buckler with the doll parts was inspired by the Lilith-myth. My model was the stunning Florence Kasumba who is an actress here in Germany. She rocked it.
